We drove the boat up the Krka River to Skradin to take a look at the Krka National Park, one of the country's Top 10 places, according to our guide book.
We were not disappointed.
On the way upriver, we stopped in Sibenik, a medium-sized city known for its cathedral and its old town, the only one in the country designed by Croats rather than Romans.
The cathedral had some really cool carvings inside and out, including these faces paying homage to "common people" rather than saints.
We piloted our vessel further upstream through canyons and channels to Skradin.
After tying up at the ACI Skradin marina, we set out on a 12 mile bike ride through the interior.
We came across an olive oil factory where we had the owner bottle us two flavors, strong and light.
After a long uphill slog, the route leveled off. As we rolled through the village of Bratiskovci we encountered a spirited game of bocce, which we watched for awhile. These guys were good.
Then we tucked in for the night.
Falling water everywhere.
The recent rains pushed the banks over their limit.
A nature hike led through the overflowing stream...
...and the flowers.
As an added bonus, we bought tickets for a boat ride above the falls to a small island with a monastery and a second set of falls further on, making for a full day. After our tour of the park, we pedaled back to the boat, exhausted but fulfilled.
This place is worth visiting.
