Kornati Islands

"On the last day of the Creation, God desired to crown His work, and thus created the Kornati Islands out of tears, stars and breath."

So wrote George Bernard Shaw, according to all the brochures offered by the Kornati National Park.







Entering the park by sailing yacht, one can understand why GBS was so intrigued.

"Other worldly" are two words that come to mind as one is enveloped by these islands.

Seemingly far away, but actually less then 20 nautical miles from Sibinek, we had entered a another dimension, one where time and Internet melt away.









The islands were declared a National Park in 1980 to protect them and their marine surroundings. We spent only one night in the park anchored at Otok Lavsa, claimed in our guide book as another Top 10 Croatian experience not to be missed. We would have spent longer, but the steep per night fees imposed by the National Park and the need to start heading back south ushered us away.






We climbed a hill on Lavsa and strolled a sandy beach. Later, we grilled fish on the pushpit barbecue as the sun sunk in the west. That night, the moonless sky was as bright with stars as I have ever seen it.
