Doing Your Part

Borrowing heavily from the guidance used by John Neal for Mahina Tiare III, I put together a sheet entitled "Doing Your Part" for family and friends visiting us aboard Windleblo this summer. Here it is:

Doing Your Part
Tidiness: Windleblo is your home during your voyage. Please keep her clean, tidy, and shipshape at all times.
Duty Roster: Complete your duty as soon as possible in the morning and before shore activities.
Cabins: For safety, please do not hang items on the leecloths or on any fittings in your cabin. Do not leave any items lying on your berth. Keep all surfaces free of personal items whenever we are sailing.
Bedding: Spread your sheet before lying on your bunk. Make your bed and tidy your cabin upon rising.
Carpet: Avoid getting the carpet wet as the dampness mars the varnished floorboard beneath. Keep wet shoes in your hanging locker or shower. Damp items go in the shower to dry.
Clothing: Avoid getting your clothing wet. It will be difficult to dry. No uncovered fleece above decks.
Foul Weather Gear: Put on and remove foul weather gear in the cockpit. Do not wear foul weather gear below decks.
Interior Wood: Please be king to the soft mahogany interior wood work. No belt buckles or clothes with studs or protruding zips. Be gentle with all doors, drawers, and hatches – never let go of the catch when opening and closing them, and please don’t slam them shut. Always check that you are not jamming anything in the cupboard doors. Treat Windleblo gently.
Shoes: Only non-marking soled shoes on deck that have never been worn ashore. Use separate shoes/sandals ashore – stow these in a plastic bag.
Showers: Fresh water in very limited aboard Windleblo. To conserve, we use showers onshore whenever possible. If none are available, a shower every other day is the norm, using as little fresh water as possible. Any showering is contingent on our water supply, so please check with Jack in advance.
Laundry: There is not sufficient water onboard for washing clothes. All laundry is done ashore when available.
Saltwater: Avoid getting salt below. Salt crystals attract moisture making items damp and susceptible to corrosion and bad smells. If your clothes are salty do not sit below or lie on your bunk. After swimming or encountering salt spray, rinse on with fresh water on the aft deck. After encountering sand and salt, rinse, feet, shoes and belongings with salt water, then with freshwater on the swim platform.
Sunblock: Please use a minimum of sunblock lotion as it transfers and damages the cockpit cushions, interior varnish, and upholstery. If applied to areas other than your face, please cover up or wash it off before sitting anywhere.
Electricity: Please conserve! Turn your fan and lights off when leaving your berth.
Water: Please conserve! Never let the tap run. Monitor the water gauge.
Sand: Don’t bring sand below. Check your shoes, pockets, and backpack.
